I recently strung up my Stingray with D'Addario Chromes (.105, .085, .070, .050).
I decided on flats because I loved how they sounded on my old KSD 704. I chose Chromes because of the 'research' I did here on TB. I ended up with .050s because the Slinkies that the Stingray came with seemed thin on the D and G.
Just wondering if this is the right way to adjust for that or if there are other options (not that I'm changing, I heart these strings on this bass)

Just put a set of Flat EB Group II 50-105 on and am really liking them so far.

I would definitely gauge up. The perfect set of flats on a Stingray for me would be gauged something like 50-65-85-105. I feel like a 70 D string is way too big, but I normally would prefer a 60 so that may explain that. |

For steel sets i piece together sets of ProSteels in gauges .050, .065, .085, .110, .145 I mostly prefer steels strings, but one of my basses has a Circle K balanced set for more of a nickel sound.

Have anyone tried the Chromes .50 AND the .45. I'd like to know how they compare in stiffness. (sorry for the hijack... )

I'm using the .105-.50 set on my fretless Casady and i'm digging it. Also, I've been using Roto 88s lately and they're .75 and .65. Feels right to me.

Problem with the .045 G was that it seemed too tight. Not sure if getting a thicker (and therefore higher tension) string was necessarily a good fix for that but I don't hate it yet.

But I tune the 0.050 to F3 instead of G2 [edit: Correction. Make that "instead of C3"], so . . .
I much prefer the feel of thicker strings, too.

Originally Posted by FunkMetalBass I think you mean to F2 instead of G2....right? | No, sorry, I wasn't clear. My UG (upright guitarrón) is tuned:
E1-A1-D2-G2-C3-F3. I'm using a set of Rotosound TruBass RS886LDs (0.135" to 0.050") from juststrings.com, which really are intended for a six-string bass guitar tuned B0-E1-A1-D2-G2-C3. So I'm tuning them each up a fourth.
So, I really should have said that I'm tuning the C3 string up to F3. I should not have assumed that anyone was tuning the 0.050" string to G2 just because most BGs only go up to G2. But I think some guys, above, did indicate they were using 50s as G2 strings. Sorry for the confusion.
It's been a year since I put these Roto 88s on it. Before that I had GHS Precision Flats on it for a year. Zero signs of any bulging in the top yet. But that might be due to the fact that my string height is very low and the neck was somewhat-effectively reinforced when I had a longer fingerboard (extending almost down to the sound hole) installed on top of the original fingerboard.
