A guy that I know used to string all of his basses with them, (maybe he still does... I need to get out more!)... Turns out he scored a case in some type of fire sale... He gave me a set to try, but I can't get around the nasty feel, (totally subjective, I know)... Sounded okay. Nothing remarkable, except that they went dead fairly quick...

yeah I agree they do feel nasty... nothing works like free strings though. Betcha he had to wash the bronze off his fingers every night LOL

Some people like the dead string sound though. I wonder what "every breath you take" would sound like with really dead bronze strings (I believe he did the bass in that song with those string mutes you see on old musicmans and fenders (under the chrome covers.)

Bronze is not magnetic so the only thing that would eccect the pickups would be the core I would imagine the outupt would be greatly reduced. Never tried them but I don't see how they would work properly. Not really sure Just my opinion.

I had bronze strings on an electric for a while. No growl, weak lows and mids, low output. Produce focused punch when played properly. Feel nasty, but get polished by fingers.

maybe they would work with really hot pickups, or strong magnets like neodymium... Someone needs to try this on a bongo and report back LOL

Or of course a piezo equipped bass which is what most of them are designed for.

Back in '81, I sold my silver stingray to a local guy, who used the DA XL REDS. Sounded pretty decent for the mowtown material his band played.

Don't worry about the output. The core is magnetic anyways. Only about 10dB difference can be compensated with gain control.

If the windings aren't magnetic, it'll only pick up the core, and sound weak, or should, I know a guitarist who's tried it with no sucess.

As a friend says, "the WHY question occurs to me". There are many other, better choices.
