For a flatwound they are about the best I have used.
Medium tension, lots of punch and attack, decent in mids, smooth feeling and reported to last a good while.

I really like mine, and had a great experience with their Customer Service, so I'm a huge supporter. Get two sets today!

Thumbs up for them on my Jazz Bass. I've been using the same set for 2 1/2 years in a rock band and they still sound great (use the bass 4hrs a week, band + practice). I find it took the strings a little while to work in. But they have saved me a lot of money the past couple of years.

In james Jamerson's book 'Shadows Of Motown' it said that he often used flats at were at least 5 years old. Changed them only when they broke.

later.

Where's the cheapest and best online place to buy the flatwound chromes? I think I'm going to try a set on my USA Jazz Deluxe 5'er.

Anyone like the D'Addario Chromes?

I just put a set on my Fender RBV. They sound full, rich and sweet in the top end; the BP articles described them best. They are new to my bass, so they are not broken in yet. The Chromes are causing my finger tips (plucking hand) to hurt; could be the cold or I may need to build up my finger tips. I do like them and will give them 8 months to grow on me.

Today I bought some D'Addario Chromes, my first set of flatwounds ever. I've been thinking of either replacing the pickup on my EB/MM Stingray or getting a new bass entirely because my hi-fi sound wasn't going well with my new gig, an old-school surf/Hendrix-rock band. I don't think I'm going to have to do that now!

I've always been afraid to use flats because I thought I'd get a dead or muddy sound, but the top end seemed very pleasant. For the first time I can turn UP the high EQ knob on my bass and get something I want to hear. The entire bass seemed to open up with new possibilities. I also dig the texture of the strings, my right-hand fingers seem to be able to grab them easier when plucking.

Anyway, this is my first post at talkbass.com, I'm really digging the forum posts!

Anyone like the D'Addario Chrome flats?

Kristopher, welcome to the world of flats! A good set of flats can turn a decent sounding bass into a real trench digger. I'm amazed that the chromes have somewhat of a "round wound" sound to them in the upper end; although the brilliance will settle down soon. I had a chance to really sit down with my 5'r and dial in my new sound, with my main rig and modest pedal board..................very rich and full, considering I'm using a Berg HT-112 and Clarus head. I can only imagine what it will sound like with the Hartke 3500 / 4X10 rig this Tues. In addition, there are two E.V. 18" subs under the stage; no problem cuttin' thru the mix. My finger tips are adjusting to the Chromes, I'm beggining to enjoy them.
