With my guitars I will not use anything but D'addario. but on my basses i use differnt brands. One My MIM Fender P- I have exliers. They were a 5 string set and I didnt use the B sting. GC was clearing them out and I got a great deal on them. I have GHS on my Yamaha, and other Fender(MIJ) P because some Walmarts have them and they are pretty cheap.( about 5 to 6 bucks less than most guitar stores). And on my 6 string I have d 'addarios because my local mom and pop only had a 6 string bass set by d' addario.
Then not too long agao I picked up two sets of Dean Markley (4 string)Blue nickels since GC had them on sale of 8.99 per set.
So I really dont have a particular preference to any one brand of strings and it is partly due to the fact I am searching for the brand of strings I like best and have not found it yet. But also due to the fact that I buy what is cheapest since bass strings generally cost more than guitar strings.
Anyone else have no brand preferences and is like me in that they buy what's cheapest?

( Well, not me anyway!)
Since I generally am looking for a specific tone I gravitate to gear (including strings) that either I know will give me that tone or are reputed to be able to give me that tone. Which tone just depends on what style I want them for.
But hey, don't worry about it. Just keep doing your thing and don't let anyone tell you any different. Just remember to be willing to learn from your experiences.

| | | | Try our Ken Smith strings. Personally I use the Tapercore and I dont think im going to use any other string again the strings are amazing sounding and very awsome to play. I currently am using the Smith rockmaster tapercore 6 strings but I will try out the Smith tapercore Burners soon which are nickle plated rather than stainless steel. But out of every set of strings I've tryed out the Ken Smith Strings are the best I've had. |

I've got about 10 sets of Pro-steels that I'll be going thru for the next 6 months or so, and I've got two sets of Optima's (Gold) for my Jazz QMT which just look better on that bass, due to the gold hardware. |

I'm searching for those pefect strings and from what i have played so far GHS Boomers have been my favortie , but they aren't quite right. I have found a gauge i like and I'm not planning on changing that. |

Though it always seems that every 2nd or 3rd set is a set of DR highbeams. If I had to pick only one brand to use for forever, that'd be it, but I don't mind the variety of jumping around from brand to brand. |

I like the sound of steels, but would love a string that could keep it's sound longer than a couple of days.. |

This is why I'm only using Webstrings now. Whether flat or round wound they give me what I expect at a reasonable price. |

That and I like the tone I get out of them.
Does anyone else know how the Elixir tone compares to steel? |

My main/best bass I've had for about 4 years and it has the stock strings, which I love. I'm almost afraid that when they break, I won't know what to get, and I'll have a hard time experimenting. My second bass had some D'addarios that came with it, but the bass is such a POS I can't tell enough to care, but they do not feel as good. So the issue just hasn't come up yet.
I realize we are in the BG section, but I've got to have weedwhackers for upright! |

| | put a bird on it | | Join Date: Dec 2000 Location: Minnesota | | I don't have much of a preference, i can get "my sound" with any strings, however fenders work well for me because i can afford them, and i play hard so i break a lot of strings, so the cheaper the better...
however, my opinion can easily change if i got an endorsement deal |

i think that its all about finding the right string for your bass and for your style of playing. ie IMO the best strings for a stingray 5 string are Nathan East 47-130. that was after going from Hartke to Dean Markley via R Cocco and Picato. it took about 8 or 9 different brands until i found the right ones for me. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
