Anyone remember these?

Late 70's, early 80's. D'Addarrio XL Reds. Copper coated. Can't believe I still have them. Would likely be expensive to make these days with the price of copper.

Never seen, heard, or read about them before. But never mind that; what are you going to do with them? If anything, frame them as an antique piece of bass guitar / music history in your home.

Sell 'em to Nathan East, the only person I know who used more than one set...

I tried a set. Really bright and twangy with a VERY short life. They made Rotosounds seem long-lived. D'Addario quit making them a long tine ago, maybe 20 years ago.

I had them on a Rick many moons ago. I do not recall much about them. Might boil them, and string them up on one of my basses for fun.

I used these on my pink Kubicki for years, slice yer ear off they would. That copper tarnishes quickly.

My Washburn B60 Bantam had a set on when I bought it. I think I replaced them once, then it's been strung with nickel or stainless roundwounds ever since. The copper did tarnish quickly.

A company named cleartone makes them for acoustic guitars they call them reds. There coated with there emp coating and they sound really good. I would imagine they would sound great on a bass too

I remember those for sure. Talk about a memory jolt. Thanks for the pictures.
Myself, I would frame those in some fashion and enjoy them that way.

Wow, I was just trying to remember if it was copper that I played way back when. I used them on my SD Curlee. How's that for a double 80's whammy.

I may have been the other guy that really liked them.

50 copper pennies ($0.50) have roughly $1.34 worth of copper in them based on today's copper prices.

40 nickels ($2.00) have roughly $2.45 worth of nickel in them based on today's nickel prices... A couple of months ago, each nickel was worth about $0.08, that means 40 of them WAS worth $3.20.

So save those pennies, Every time you use one, you really are using $0.03!!

I have a set of red strings that came on a squire 5 string I purchased. Maybe these are those kind of strings. Always wanted to identify them. I thought of changing them till I installed a pair of big singles in that bass.
