Anyone use flats on an Ibenez SRX?

I have an Ibanez SRX550 on the way. I use EB flats on my Fender precision and jazz basses. Has anyone used flats on an SRX? I have a new pack of D'Addarios Chrome Flats I was thinking about putting on the SRX. Any input is appreciated...thanks.

I have some chromes, like yourself, that I throw on my EDB550. They originally started on an SR300DX. I tend to favor flats on passive instruments, or I leave the active pre flat. I just prefer the voice of the string by itself. Now rounds, well, that's another story.

In summary, I've had moderate success with them on both of the Ibbys, but chromes are just not my favorite when it comes to flats.

I actually have a set of chromes that I had on my jazz bass for about a week and didn't like them. I was going to try them since they're all ready open. It's just that I like flats overall.
But you have used flats on an SRX?

Well, not an SRX exactly. An SR300DX, which is an SR with what they call 'bass boost', and an EDB550 which is an ergodyne with an ash body w/ walnut top, and a neck made of wenge and bubinga. It also has a 2 band pre. So in a sense if you combine the qualities of the two it is very close to what I understand an SRX to be.

I had an SRX390 but I never had flats on it because I really never used it much. I had an SR500 with EB Flats and they sounded good on it. The SRX has some strong pick ups on it I know that.

The Ibby SRX550 came in today and I ended up putting the D'Addrios Chrome Flats on it that I had here at the house. I really like the sound but I find that the action is too high. I have the E string as low as it goes and it still rides high. I do have it strung with the ball of the strings directly under the saddle. I wonder if I go to the rear of the saddle it may drop the action a little more? I checked the neck and it looks like it's adjusted good.

I have a good old set of LaBellas 760FS on my Schecter Custom 4. It's not an Ibanez SRX, but is a modern design, active 2 band eq, EMG-HZ pickups. I really like the sound, the strings kind of widened the sonic palette of the bass, thus enhancing versatility. I can go pretty "vintage tone" if I want to, and some modern tone is always there to call upon when needed. BUT, the tension is higher, the action resulting is a bit higher than what I was used to, and, most of all, the stiffness of the string is higher. Beware that most of what we fell as "more tension" or "higher action" is just higher "stiffness". Tension and stiffness are two different things.

Some TBer gave me this advice: as long as you don't have mayor problems in the fretting hand, keep the flats and let the amp do the work: crank it up and develop light touch on plucking hand. It made all the difference to me. YMMV, of course.
