Question Anyone using LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats on their 5-string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just ordered a set of LaBella 760fl-b Deep Talkin' Flats (gauges 43 60 82 104 128) for my Stingray 5, and I'm just wondering what to expect?...

I'm most curious about the .128 gauge B-string.

FWIW, I have a set of 760fl's on my P-Bass, and I think they're great!

Just checking to see if anyone wants to share their experience with LaBella Flats on their 5'r?...

Those are the conventional steel flats, correct? I used to have a set of those on my Dean Edge 5 string and I really loved them. They felt and sounded like a million bucks.

I use them on my Lakland JO5 (passive) and I love the way they sound. Compared to the TI jazz on my Warwick fretless 5 the tension is tighter and they feel "big" on my fingers (esp. the 'B') but the sound is way down there and the sustain is forever. I have not found anything I would replace them with.

I have the FM-B set which are gauged .049 .069 .089 .109 .128 on my SR5 and the FL-B set on my Ovation acoustic 5. There is a considerable difference in the feel of these two sets. The FL-B set is, in my opinion, a much lower tension set. I've never put that set on my SR5. The Ray has the FM-B's (obviously) and the sound is HUGE! So, if you find the FL-B's to be a bit thin, try the FM-B's.

As far as the size of the B, you will notice it, but once you hear it you will be happy it's there! It will rattle your teeth out of your head! I tend to readjust how I play songs so I can work off of the B string. You just get so much bottom to any note you play on that string. In fact, I have a piece I'm working on now with an E octave drone where I actually capo the neck at the 5th fret. The difference between playing the open E string and it's octave on the D and playing the 5th fret E on the B and it's octave on the A is absolutely... !

Yeah I use them, well I do when I have a fretless bass. They even sound great on a fretted instrument. Really great strings!

Well, I received and installed the 760fl-B set on my SR5. I'm liking them even more than I thought I would! The B-string seems a little floppy right now. But, IME with these strings (on my P-Bass), they tend to "tighten-up" a little after they have some playing-time on them. I have a gig this weekend, and that will be the true test. I'm really looking forward to it...

With these, small changes in saddle height will affect the feel of the string. I have beeen using the same set on my SR5 for about the last year and they still sound great.
