B string + flats = muddy?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm about to buy some flats because I really love the tone of them that I hear, but one thing is holding me back. Has anyone here owned a B string flatwound? Was it very muddy and uneven?

My bass has a 35" scale and the gauge of the string I'm getting is 135 so tension won't be a problem, but how do you all think the bass will stand up clarity wise?

just knowing the 35" scale is not nearly enough info to judge how it'll sound with flats.

That said, I have a 5 string with LaBella Deep Talkin Bass Flats that has a killer B (34" scale). I went that route from playing another TBers 6 string that was strung with them.

I have a Pedulla Rapture 5 strung with D'Addario Chromes. No issues here. It's even a 34" scale. If you're worries about it, try buying a single B flatwound and try it. If you don't like it, you won't be out $40+.

Chromes on my 5 String Sadowsky (active jazz, 34"). Great B string, actually better than the DR LowRiders I had on it before.

I had Chromes on my Squier Affinity Jazz V. They sounded pretty good. I don't know, the jury is still out on this one... I'll probably try them a third time because I really enjoy flats. I play church music, so we'll see. But the B sounds really fat, which is a good thing. Try it out!

I never had success with flat strings and a B string. The B string always sounded dead to me, it just produced a thump with absolutely no sustain.

TI or Lakland Joe Osborne flats both sound great. However, they JOs must go through the bridge. TIs can go through the body.

Well, it will sound like flats. Whether or not that is described as muddy or not is a matter of personal preference.

Never had any problem with my flat B's, using Roto, or Daddario.

I did a gig recently using la bella flat wound strings on a EB Stingray 5. The last time I used these was about 25 years ago.
At the start of the gig I missed the top end a bit, but by about half way through I really got into it.
Immense low end, as you would expect. The sound sits really well with other instruments.
They were a bit strange on double stops as the lower harmonics are very pronounced on the higher notes.
I would say that there is a more even response (less difference in tone between the B and the other strings) with these la bellas in comparison to round wound strings.
Flat wound strings are always going to have a lot less top end than round wound unless you boost it with eq. but even then they sound very different.

I have heard of players who will use a roundwound B string with a set of flats for the rest.

Glad to hear this. I have a G&L 1505 fretless on it's way to me and it is strung with Chromes. This will be my intro to flats on a 5. Boom boom boom boom...
