Question B-string length question…

Sign in to disble this ad
I’m relatively new to five-string basses, I’m in a band, and gigging a Fender MIM Jazz V.

Guitarist suggested I get a set of quarter pounders and he’d install and set it all up for me, so I figured I’d get a new set of strings, so I got a set of DR nickel lowriders.

He just called and said that when installing the B string (he’d done this before, but never on a fiver) the fat part got to the tuner, and it unwound. He called the local music shop and they said they sell individual strings, so I’ll go get one tomorrow, but if I get the same string, I’ll run into the same problem.

Is it that the Jazz V is a 34” and the strings were made for a 35” neck? Do they sell strings for different neck lengths and I didn’t get the right ones?

I’m kind of ignorant about this, and I need some advice so I can get through this.

Thanks so much for any advice/education on this.

Marko

Nah, that sounds like a defective string or a screw up by your guitarist. Nearly all string are made too long these days so you can cut them down to size.

i think something similar happened to me. i bought a set of string for my 6 string bass and the B and E strings were not long enough. like they were made for a 34" instead of a 35".

It's ok to have the fat part on the tuner. My five string is 34" and the taper doesn't start until well beyond 35". There's nothing wrong with the string.
