B-string on my Tobias

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

my main basses are both 6-strings, a Tobias and a home made bass with Ken Smith soapbar pickups.
De home made bass sounds pretty much like a real Ken Smith: it has great definition, and the greatest sounding B-string.
The Tobias has a warmer sound, and has a wonderful slap and pop sound. When playing louder songs, it tends a to be a bit to "friendly", compared to the home made bass. But with a bit of EQ tweaking, it's a beatiful bass. However, I find it hard to get a well defined B-string. If I back off the neck pickup, it gets better, but this makes the other strings sound thinner.
I use standard Elixir strings on both basses (.032 ... .130); on both basses, I keep the action of the B fairly low, so that the distance to the pickups stays small. When I heighten the action, the B gets even less defined.
Any advise to get more definition?? Maybe another B-string???
Thanks!!
Regards,
Jaap

I'd try with changing your strings first, since that's the cheapest and quickest way to get a big change in your tone. Maybe some stainless steel strings or some bright nickels would help you. The Elixirs feel good on your fingers but the coating does kind of dampen the highs, IMO and IME at least.
