B string volume question

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys....I have a question. I have a Brice Douglas 5 (Marcus Miller like copy) that I love but the B string (no matter what brand I use) is always quieter than E through G. I've never used anything over a 1.30 for the B and the rest are .45, .65, .80, 1.00.

Question....would a 1.45 B (D'addario) be louder?

Just a heads-up, a 1.45 string would wider than your thumb finger.

That being said, try raising the pickups under the B-string. If that doesn't work, then I'm all out of ideas... Best of luck!

I don't think it's a string issue, try raising the pickup a bit on the B side.

Did that already but there's still some room to raise it so I'll try it again.

It's also going to be in your tone. Boost the bass slightly and the low-mids a bit so that you can really hear the second overtone of the fundamental.

The .145 B can potentially be louder, but not in the sense that you are thinking.

The .145 B will have a more prominent fundamental (32Hz) and will be bassier in nature. It will not have as much clarity as a .135 B, which is slightly less bassy and doesn't have a quite as powerful fundamental.

You have to realize, though, that more often than not, you are hearing the second and third overtones of these strings. Your B and E strings (fundamentals of 32Hz and 40Hz) are down near that threshold of the human ear. With the way that sound waves are transmitted, the lower frequencies need substantially more power to produce them at the same decibel level as the higher pitched notes.
