Balanced/Focused 5 str.set for 34" bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for (who does not ;-) a well balanced/focused (both in sound and feel) 5 str. set for 34" scaled 5 str. bass.

Preferably (tight wounded/smooth warmsounding) Nickel with soft to medium tension.

What's important to look for, when it comes to:

Taper wound/ordinary wound

Light/medium/heavy gauges

Light/medium/thigt tension ?

Does "string through body" increase balance/focus/tone ?

IMO, it doesn't make a difference.

The strings on my Fender USA Jazz V are Fender Brand "Super Bass" nickels. They meet all your criteria and I absolutely adore them. Give them a try!

two sets:

TI Jazz Flats. i got the regular 34" scale set. they were long enough to string through the body of my G&L, but the B string was way too fat to fit. strung through the bridge, these strings were amazingly uniform in tension and tone. these are soft tension and are very warm sounding. they sound better two weeks after you put them on. and two weeks after that they sound even better.

pickles turned me onto Labella Hard Rockin Steels. there are several different guages of B-string available. i asked pickles and he recommended the .128 B. i opted for the 40-100 set with the 128 B and man I am HOOKED. this set sounds amazingly uniform as well. and while i absolutely love the TIs, i think the Labellas are now my string of choice for my 34" scale 5 string. in fact, now that i found them, my G&L L-1505 just became my number one bass. the B string sounds great. E at the 5th fret of the B is too close to the open E string to call.

the Labellas are steel, so they sound more live. they are going for pretty cheap at most internet stores. the TIs are never cheap.

either of these sets will make you happy.

Has anyone compared the TI flats to the D'Addario Chromes? I like the relative brightness to the Chromes, but I wouldn't mind them having less tension. And, the TI's are more expensive.

and i'm starting to think that stringing through the bridge or body doesn't make that much difference with all else being equal. in fact, to me part of the G&L sound comes from that massive bridge. stringing through the body seems to defeat the purpose of having all that metal.

Which set are supposed to give the most balanced output in comparision between (same brand/material) 0.040 - 60 - 80 - 100 - 128 or
0.045 - 65 - 85 - 105 - 128 (the same 0.128 B str. in both sets?

i don't know. i went 40-100 as opposed to 45-105 because in my mind it seemed like it would bring everything closer together in output and tension. whether that is true or not i won't know until i try the 45-105. i will try it next time tho, and give you an update. but that won't be for a couple of weeks.

the .128 is the same in both sets.

I really dig the HRS 40-100 with the taper 128 B. They are bright but not zingy bright. They are a flexible string and are relatively smooth for steel. I use them on a Sadowsky RV5 and they really sit well in a mix.

How long is the tapered part on the B str. (from ballend to full wound)and how long is the total length of the B str. (from ball end to the end of full wound. My Clover XP15.5 bass is just 945mm from ball end point to the center of the B str. string post/tuner and ca 25mm from ballend to bridge sadle. So there is some limits to my string choice) on the LaBella HRS set ?
