Ball Holes?

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry for the title, but now that I have your attention...

I just got hold of a used bass, and when experimenting with changing strings I find some string balls slip right through the bridge (Please forgive, and feel free to correct, my noob terminology). The bass was made in 1978, so I'm asking if the bridge is just worn out, or is there a specific larger size string ball I should be looking for? If the holes are just worn, what do I do in order to accommodate the strings I wish to put on if the balls are too small?

You pretty much have it: "Ball ends"

What strings are you using? I admit, I've never really given that part of the string much thought. They always seemed mostly the same size to me.

Funny you should ask that, because I really wish I knew. I've been through three used basses this year, and I've just sort of acquired strings. The only strings I bought this year were some Ernie Ball Slinky, which fit the new bass. Well, the ball ends do. The bass they were originally on had a 2+2 head, the new one is 4 in line, so D and G are now too short.

Anyway, the strings I attempted to put on today were on my Schecter Model T when I bought it. I wish I knew what they are, because I like them alot and I want to try to find a similar set for the new bass, but the damn things have tiny balls that pull right through. I know, I know... I plan on taking it in to get set up anyway, but I just want to solve this beforehand so I know what kind of strings to shop for.

you should just be able to use some little metal washers or something similar from Home Depot or Ace Hardware... Something that you can thread the strings through that will prevent the ball end from pulling through the holes in the bridge

+1 Bring the string to your local hardware store and find a washer that fits.
