Let me amend that and ask which of the following is recommended:

Nickel plated steel EXL
Coated EXP
Half Round Pure Nickel

I like steel. I have mostly used DR Lowrider Steels, and lately been using Chrome flatwounds, which are also steel.

stainless rounds... LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels to be specific.


You are aware that all 3 of those nickel strings you've listed are completely different, right?

Rounds, Coated Rounds and Ground wounds (closer to flat wounds).

dr highbeams steel on the thumb 5 neck through, 40-120

daddario exl170-5 nickel on the corvette standard ash s string (bart pre and pickups) 45-130

daddario exl170 nickel on the american p bass deluxe 4 string 45-100

each bass is has different tonal characteristics i'm trying to hear out of them.

Given that, the obvious choice is nylon tapewound.

There are so many string choices, I don't know what I like.

Usually, it's stainless steel. For the last 5 months I've used DR SS types. Today I put on Elixir Nanoweb 105-45.
