Bassists who use Nylon Tapewounds

Most bassists use rounds, and a close second is flats, but who uses nylons? Aside from Paul McCartney, I can't think of anyone who uses them... any other big names?

Graham Maby who has done a lot of work, most notably Joe Jackson.

BTW, flats are not a close second. Rounds are at least 80% of bass string sales. Talk Bass is not an accurate gauge of consumption.

Bassists who use flats tend to keep them on for years. Rounds are replaced probably every 3-6 months. String sales are also not an accurate means of gauging consumption. Although I will speculate that the gap between rounds and flats is larger than what TB would have us expect.

If I were to bass it on my personal knowledge of bassists I actually I know, it would be around 50/50. Just sayin'.

I think the poll on TB about strings would be a fair representation.

I'm by no means a big name, but I love the set of black nylon tape-wounds I have on one of my basses.

Not sure McCartney used nylon tapewounds all that much.

Maybe (?) some, during Rubber Soul if he used the Hofner. McCartney had already received his Ric bass before the Rubber Soul Sessions. And that is what was mostly used. No nylon tapewounds on the Ric. McCartney, when asked what strings he used, his reply: "Long, shiny ones."

Haven't seen/heard any evidence of the Hofner until "Let it Be", that's where the nylon tapewounds appear. He only really used his Hofner bass, with nylon tapewounds, during the Rooftop segment. For the songs he's playing piano on (in studio), Lennon played the Fender VI. He is using a Hofner (the one that was stolen) during the rehearsals at Twickenham Film Studios.

McCartney had two Hofners up until his oldest one was stolen during the filming of Let it Be. That's the bass he used in the Revolution video, 'long, shiny strings' and foam under the strings near the bridge. Maybe he used that bass for the record.

It's the 2nd bass that had the nylon tapewounds - see Rooftop pictures.

Disclaimer: I was NOT present at any Beatles' sessions.

I saw an old photo of Glen Cornick that looked like he had them at one time. Wasn't a very clear photo, but they looked like tapewounds.

Pretty sure McCartney was really only known for using them on Abbey Road, they stick out on all of those tracks pretty well.

All of them? You can't listen to "Come Together" and not hear nylons.

Nylons on what? A Hofner?

Beatles recording Come Together:

Sorry about the teenie pictures, but these are nearly impossible to find as it is... I did have larger ones, but can't locate them. If I do, I'll post.

Other than the tunes that George played bass on (Fender VI, Jazz), Paul most likely used only his Ric for Abbey Road (maybe occasionally the Jazz), but no nylons.*
