BEAD tunning with regular EADG strings

Sign in to disble this ad
HI, I just tunned my bass to BEAD but with EADG strings (Sadowsky flats .40-.100). They are a little floppy though but I kind of lliking it, maybe if it only was just a little little bit higher tension. I was thinking if i put a heavier strings it will get better.

The reason I did this is because I donŽt want to change /mod the nut.

Any experience/thoughts?

I've used bead before with eadg strings on a MIJ P Bass. They were heavies though. It worked out ok but I eventually got a reslotted nut and switched to a proper bead set. The b sounded much clearer after the change and the tuning held much better.

I'm guessing this will be different for different basses though.

Go for a thicker gauge. As thick as your nut will allow. I'm going to do the same with my cheap ibanez so I can use it as a backup for my Jazz 5string when I play shows

Go for 45s minimum. Would be better just getting a new nut fit for a B standard set.

Some basses don't require any nut modification at all when dropping to a BEAD set.

Chromes are pretty high tension. You may be able to use their .105 set. I did an estimate of the tension for BEAD and it comes to 31.1, 37.6, 45, 41.2 lbs. For comparison, TI flats (.100) EADG tension is 34.4, 31.3, 37.5, 37 lbs.

Now I have never tried the .105s, but I do have chromes (.100) on an SR4 tuned DGCF, and they still have more tension than a pbass with TI flats. Nice thing about chromes is that they aren't too expensive if it doesn't work, unlike TIs.

This is a bad idea. Get a 5 string set.

Look for a 4 string set with a .130 or bigger on bottom.

the original fender strings that came with my bass, the e string is a ,110tw. Do you think a 125 B string can get in there without mod the nut??

IŽd get a 5 string bass but ....you know...money

IŽd be glad to get a 5 string set, but I really donŽt want to mod the nut.

But in this case IŽd have to mod the nut, right? And for that IŽd put a 5 string set without the g string were the b had a .125...but I donŽt know if that fills in
