Beefing up the C

I don't prefer the sound of a new C string, and I'd rather it sound old with more bass. Is there a way to accomplish this without waiting? I don't want to put grease on my string, though.

Could I use a .45 for the C? Or would that be a bad idea?

Would probably be incredibly tight. That's a gauge generally used for a G string... going up a 4th would have a lot of tension. Perhaps something like a .035 or so?

Yeah, I know it's a G, I just have spare ones. I don't really have access to anything above a .30. I MIGHT have a .40, but that would be pretty tight, too.

i was about to say something along the lines of "use a guitar string, they make them around .35 guage for the A string on med light sets" but then I realized it might not be long enough...

you could try it, it would be like $1 for a single at a local music shop. local music shops around here carry singles anyways. Or they might have a bass string guage you need.

flat-wound strings are duller as well, you could try one of those in the normal guage

I tried the flatwound C, and it was all right, but it didn't work too well, especially because I didn't like the other strings being flat. I like flats for fretless, but not fretted.
