| | | | Besides tone, what do you look for when selecting strings?

We started getting into this debate on the previous Professor String thread, but it seems like a good topic by itself.
My top four:
1. They need to be dependable. (Most have no warranty)
2. Good packaging. (I've had brand new strings that were tarnished in the package)
3. Price
4. Can buy them in singles. (Mix and match for a custom set)
Cheers! |

1) Consistancy from string to string and set to set. In fact, this is really a pet peeve.
2) Dimensional stability...... do the gauges match what is on the package. Unfortunately, I have a day gig.... I'm a engineer in an automotive manufacturing facility. I have access to all of this cool measuring equipment. I also like to see from set to set consistant string lengths, and silk lengths. Some string companies really need to work on this..... I swear some companies just wind these things, measure afterwards, and throw them into the set wherever they dimensionally are closest. Other companies nail the strings dimensionally with every single set.
3) Feel.
4) Life.

They need to be Stainless
They need to be 45-105
They Need to be DR
or
MTD
or
D'addario
Otherwise, I'll just use my dead strings until those conditions are met |

2)Gauge (fav is 105-50, flatwound or roundwound)
3)Durability (able to be used for different tunings over and over again)
4)Feel (gotta be smooooooth as silk!) |

I play pretty damn hard a lot of the time and DR strings can take it. Most other brands strings I'll break at least one after a week or two of playing. Plus they sound awesome.

Edit.... actually... just one of them.... I'm confusing companies here....

I use DR Lo-Riders these days. They seem to last longer than other DRs.

I kill strings. I don't break them, but I deaden them very quickly. Maybe I shouldn't eat chicken wings on stage.
I want them to sound like new as long as possible. Ernie Balls and Rotosounds seem to be the best with DR and GHS a bit behind.

| | | | tone, feel, life span, quality of tone as strings wear (some worn strings are junk, others are simply worn strings), ease of finding (i'm not searching out some online link to buy strings no matter how hyped they may be) , price. |

| | | 1. Do they come in 5's? (problem locally)
2. Can I get them when I need them... (see above)
3. How fast do they die (I've got "acid hands"...sigh...)
LOL that's about it right now...... haven't changed enough strings yet to tell em apart . Never have changed my black tapewounds in.....2 years....... it is time to change my other 2 sets though... thread searching here we come!
