one more for D'addario XLs. Rediculously cheap price for a two-pack (comes to like $12.50 a set). Only problem is that I use the Soft Top/Regular Bottoms and they don't make them for 5 strings, only 4s and 6s. I can always just buy the 6s and throw away the top string but come on :P

Strings & Things

The first set of new strings I ever bought were D'Addario XL5s. I liked them, they lasted a while.

After a couple sets, I wanted to try out EB Slinkys...pretty good, though I didn't like the "B" string tone (too much metallic ringing when playing it open).

Last August, I tried Rotosound Swing Bass 66s and WHOA!
I LOVE these things! I keep playing my bass moe these days JUST TO HEAR THE TONE!

Of course, there were other external factors. I recently learned to set up my bass properly so it feels better playing it. Also, it's a gauge/availability factor. The previous D'Addarios and Ernie Balls I've used were all medium gauge.
These Rotosounds are light gauge, which I prefer. My local stores do not have light gauge D'Addario XL5s in stock and EB Super Slinky 5s just came on the market...

My next set will be DRs, just to see what all the rage is about.

Good sounding EL CHEAPO'S

I've only tried a few different types but I am impressed with the agressive tone of Everly Bass Rockers nickel plated rounds. At $15-$20 a set I am very happy with these. I can't really speak of their longevity because I change my strings about once a month anyway.

GHS Boomers are OK...........
D'Addario XL in a pinch
Charlie Stringer's Snarling Dog's are too dull going on (couldn't resist trying them with a name like that).

GHS B52s Boomers

Good overall tonal quality on basses with active and passive eq with lasting brightness over the Rotosounds I've used in the past. These will fit 35" scale lengths, I like the tonal qualities on the E string because it is not flat like other brands I've used - even bought a set for my girlfriend's daughter bass.

I really like Webstrings' nickel light for my 5 string. I was dubious at first about such light gauges, but I found that my basses intonate MUCH better with these than another other string I've used. The company has been a joy to work with also.
