Best 'B' for 35" scale

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently got a 35" scale 5-string bass that has string-through on the low B. I tried to put EB Slinky's on the bass but they wouldn't work because the taper starts before the nut. I guess they are designed for 34" scale since EBMM basses are that scale. What strings can I use that are going to be long enough?
Also, any recommendations for best fundamental from a B string? The brand on this bass (not sure) sound harsh and springy with not nice overtones. Any advice appreciated!

For a string through body on a 35" scale bass you have to look for strings listed as "extra long scale". Typically 37" scale.

Go over to Juststrings.com

They're are a few brands that have this size and just strings seem to list a lot of information in their description. Even if you don't buy from them it's a good site to research which string to try.

Last two sets I tried on my Lakland were Labella Slappers and a set of Fodera string.

Both have a great B string, but both are very different from each other.

D'addario Prosteels EPS170-5SL's will work. I put them on my Lakland 55-94 and string them thru the body.

Labellas or Sadowsky extra-longs if you can also top-load.

What kind of bass you are we talking about? I think this would be more of a bass specific question since B's will not sound the same on all 35" scale basses.

Re:strings

It's a Lull P5 with Aguilar preamp(sonic blue!!). I think I got it from the original owner with Lull strings that were quite used and I felt like the B was not very focused sounding (probably because the strings were dead!). I just picked up some Boomers to tide me over but had to string the B through the bridge instead of the body because the windings tapered off before the nut. It's still 35" scale through the bridge so not too bad. I'm kind of feeling like nickels are better than steels for the vibe of this bass. I wonder if I can buy a separate B in a longer scale and get a 4 string set to go with it....

I would post a thread calling on Lull P owners to ask what strings sound best on their basses. Good luck!

Try out a Dean Markley .135 - it is one of very few that is wrapped only 3 times.

FWIW extra long strings have a 38" winding to accomodate this very thing - and yes, Dean Markleys come this long.

I really like: MTD 135x's, Ken Smith's Taper Core, and the DR Low riders.

My two favorites for my 55-94 are DR Longneck Med. Lt. and Lakland Stainless Steels .45-.128. I have found they sound very similar to one another, the DR's being a little more pristine for a lot more money. I heard that the Laklands are actually fashioned after LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels like Dan Lakin used to play, but that's second hand information.

re:strings

I'm really glad to get all this input. I'm gonna have to start buying my strings online. I bought strings for years at GC but the selection is somewhat limited(DR,EB,D'addario,GHS,Markeley).
