FWIW my preference is for Fender flats. So far ive only tried them on my P bass but will slap a set on my Casady after the XL-170's die.Ive tried LaBella Deep Talkin flats on both and while nice,a bit too dark sounding for my tastes.Good luck!

Question

I've tried searching, can't find what I need. I also seem to be latching onto threads that are a couple of days old.

Anyway, what I am thinking is that I LOVE the sound of DR Lowriders (oh so complex and lovely) on my fretted jazz except for the fact that I've been playing fretless/flatwound for so long (like, 13 years) that I can't control the rasping fret/fingering noise. I know it's probably a matter of technique, and I am working on it, but I also just don't like the feel of roundwounds under my fingers.

What I was wondering is if anyone knows of any flats that have a nice interesting "complex" sound. Most flats have a really mellow sound that I like, but I would also like to find something a little different in a flatwound, something with more overtone and complexity or depth to the tone.

I haven't tried groundwounds or half-roundwounds yet, but it is something I'm looking into.

Any suggestions?

FF.

Well, if you like the roundwound sound, but not the finger noise, a half-round might be a good idea. Too bad DR doesn't make any, because I understand what you're saying about the Lo-Riders. They are really excellent strings. The only time I've tried half-rounds is on new basses in a store, so I don't have too much experience with them. However, they seemed to me to be much brighter than most flats, but with a little less "edge" than rounds.

Rotosounds Baby!

I've ALWAYS used roundwounds on fretted and fretless alike, until recently when i switched away from roundwounds altogether. I went through several sets not liking the lack of "complexity" . I have discovered the answer, Rotosound medium jazz flats. They are springy (slapable), no fretnoise and can run the gambit from really low thumpy reagge tones to nice crisp punchy sounds. very cool and not too expensive.

Nanook and I agree Pyramds is there anything else.
When you can get a years worth of playing at 15 hours a week and last a year, you tell me which is a better deal. And the sound is far superior.

Pyramid Gold users,

Somehow, years ago I got the impression that PGs "rolled" under your fingers when you tried to bend notes.is that correct ? or do they "behave" like most other strings? I think they have multiple wire cores, correct?

Anybody ever use Ernie Ball Flatwounds? I have 'em on my Yamaha BBN4F, and I think they sound good, but I have nothing to compare them to... except the stuff I read in Bassplayer mag.
