best fretless strings

I just got a fretless bass, a 97 warwick corvette with an ebony board. I like the muah sound and the tight jaco sound, so I need rounds on it. What are the best strings for fretless?

I like Elixers on my fretless. Smooth, don't chew up the fingerbord like regular roundwounds, great tone, and incredibly long lasting. You can tell that I like 'em...

I have a very slightly used set of Sunbeams in the Accessories FS cheap ...

They're nice strings. TONS of mwah.

That said, I like Smith Compressors more, on both fretless and fretted.

I've gone back and forth between DR Sunbeams and DR Lo-Rider roundwounds on my fretless basses for a couple of years. Both are available in nickle, which I prefer for its smooth feel compared to the more abrasive feel of stainless, and nickle also is a lot easier on the fingerboard.

The only difference between the two is a round core (Sunbeams) vs. a stiffer hex core. I ended up sticking with the Lo-riders. Both are great fretless strings that seem to last three times longer than anything else I've tried, but Sunbeams are a bit too soft feeling for my playing style.

Lo-Riders are more growly, aggressive and focused, and they feel a lot firmer than Sunbeams. They also seem to cut through the mix a little better than the warmer, rounder sounding Sunbeams, but YMMV depending on your gear and playing style.

I've had positive experiences with DR Fat Beams Light and Ken Smith Rock Masters Light. Both of these are s.s. roundwounds in very light gauges: 40-60-80-100. I plan to try Spector Lights (40-60-80-95) next.

For me, light gauge s.s. strings are the key to making a fretless really sing.

I generally go with DR Hi-Beams. I like the tone and mwah I get from them. Lights might be a little better for that than the ones I use, but I prefer the feel of a heavier string, so I go with bigger gauges.

Might have better luck in the string forum.

I think your string choice really depends on what kind of sound you're going after, your playing style, and what kind of music you're playing.

Any nickel round will do. Get a light guage though, the more fexible, the better mwah.

Does a lower tension string give more of the "mwah" sound on a fretless?
