Question BEST GAUGE FOR FLATWOUND G STRING??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello bass community. I'd like personal experience advice on which gauge is the best for flatwounds so that the G string actually sounds like a bass string? I currently have Fender flats, lightest guage, on my MIM Fender Jazz. They sound amazing until I pluck the G string, which sounds deader than dead. All advice about gauges and brand names would be greatly appreciated. Happy new year to all F-cleffers!!!

I like .45 for the G string. I think Jamerson used 50's but I think that would be too much tension for me.

For me the fender flats have way too much tension.
I like D'Addario Chromes .100 on the E.
Gauge should match original of Fender, with a minimal amount of T-rod tweaking.
Not for everyone, but I like it.

Thank you! I was about to order the D'Addario Chromes awhile ago, but I was on the fence between those and GHS brite flats. Now I'm DEFINITELY gonna buy the DA Chromes, since they've gotten lots of positive reviews, especially from you.

Thanks! I was in Colorado Springs a few weeks ago, just passing through from Westcliff in the mountains. Awesome beauty!!! Back in the SF bay area now.

Whick set are you using? I've noticed the same thing on my P bass. I'm using the 9050m which has the .55

Tinkering with the idea of getting an ML pack and use the .50, but leave the rest in from the M set.

The .50 should also feel better to me than the .55 I think.

Otherwise, I typically like .45, but if I use that with the M set, it may be unbalanced... Not sure
