BEST GAUGE STRINGS TO USE FOR 4 STRING IN B

Sign in to disble this ad
hey, i use a ampeg svt3 pro head with a warwick thumb nt 4 string. these 2 combined have a awesome sound. the only problem is play in the tuning B F# B E as i play in a metal band and use my fingers. when i was in the studio recording it was picking up all the flapping and tapping sounds. i think this is due to the tuning and the string gauge. ive still got the standard 4 gauge strings on there that came with the bass and was just wandering which would be the best gauge strings to use for that tuning and style of play. any other tips are also welcome.

Cheers

P.S dont give me using a pick as a tip because i hate using them and then you just loose the hole feel of playing bass and you can also check out the recording at www.myspace.com/neosphereuk and let me know what you think. cheers

Every response will be tainted with personal preference - mine included - so give a bit more info if you can; in standard tuning, what gauge A and D strings sound and feel good to you?

I'll ping back once you've filled me in

Okay - I will take accepted gauges for A and extrapolate. Given a .080 or .085 as A here is what I'd suggest;

B - .135 (I suggest a tapered string)
F# - .090
B - .070
E - .050

Just for interest's sake, I play a G&L L-2000 4 string bass with a tuning of A-D-G-C and the gauges I use are 135-110-90-75. They seem fine as far as tension goes and my action is quite low too.

There's a bit of fret buzz if a really thwack the strings about but you tend only to hear it from the bass itself, rather than in the signal from the pickups.
