Love flats, play a five string p bass, love Pino, and going for a nice round sound, as smooth as possible.
Thinking of playing Heavy gauged? Pros and cons of heavy?

Thinking of playing Heavy gauged? Pros and cons of heavy? | IME, most flats already are high in tension, and typically heavier gauges have, you guessed it, higher tension. For some players this isn't a big deal, but for me it really hurts my joints. I'd actually suggest going for a lighter gauge unless you play with a really light touch. |

For me the Jamersons can be set very low and therefore don't feel very tight to me. I know that's not everyone's experience. The tonal difference that I have found is not very noticeable but with the Jamersons you can play lightly and get the same sort of sound as the 760FL or you can dig in more and not have them bottom out.

Jamerson's are only available in 4 string sets... but you can add a Low-B but the LaBella Flat Low B is a .128... |

| | | | Looks like it's the 790FLs! Thanks guys. Would I have to make action/truss adjustments?

The 760FL-B set is what I suggest, too. |

(Action / Intonation)... You may or may not need to make neck adjustments... |

| | | | 760FL Hello WorshipBassist,
I have to agree with everyone's input on this subject. The 760FL's are the strings for you. If your interested in hearing Pino at work with the 760FL's, you can always check out John Mayer's "continium" album, amazing tone! Thanks to all the players at talkbass who responded with excellent advice for worshipbassist!
Best regards,

Anyhow, I found the 760fls to be uneven feel wise... The E and A were nice and fat but the G and D were much thinner...and subsequently it sounded uneven... I adjusted my truss rod and bridge but could never get an even thump across all 4 strings... This was on a P bass. |

and from my experience , no matter what brand or specifically guage, there is always that break in period

I've found the Jamerson set just too heavy, but there are lighter choices if I'm not mistaken. I now have one or another LaBella flat set on 4 working basses. It's addictive, I guess .

It took me a little a while to get used to the FM's but I think they have a certain meatiness in their tone that the FL's don't and I tried those on my P Bass too. The FL's are definitely easier to play with a little less tension but once you get used to the FM's they're the best strings ever IMO. |

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I prefer the 760FL set in .043-.103. I tried the Jamerson set (they appear to be called the "Original 1954" set now) once and found them just too stiff to be comfortable. They're .052-.110.
It surprised me because I didn't think that the seemingly minor difference in string diameter would cause such a significant difference in feel.
