Best low tension, light-guage roundwounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm getting a new bass soon. I love the TI flats on my current bass, but inspired by my favorite bassist, Entwistle, I want to try some rounds again. I think the reason I didn't like rounds when I started playing, about 8 months ago, was because of the wear-and-tear they gave my fingers (and the pain).
Now, I know my hands/fingers can handle a set of rounds, but I would still like a low-tension, light-guage set.

Any reccomendations?

DR Sunbeams, nickel round wound #NLR-40, 40-60-80-100. These fit your description.

I'm using T-I Superalloy roundwounds, just got them installed but so far they play and sound great.

I'm really diggin' the Nickel version of Dean Markley Blue Steels on my Jack Casady. I also love the soft feel of TI flats, and find these to be very comfortable with great tone.

Lightest low tension round wounds that I have used and know of are Roto-Sound RS66.
They are super light and easy to deal with for someone in your situation. Good Luck!

These sound perfect but I'll research 'em all, thanks.

Any others?

You really should try the Thomastik-Infeld Powerbass. I have them on my Fender Roscoe Beck, and they take a light touch, but put out excellent volume and tone across the spectrum. I've got another set I bought here, waiting to go on another bass.

Yep. These are low tension, very easy on the fingers, and all-around beautiful strings. I play the heavier gauge medium set and have grown very fond of them.

One thing to note: I've found the sunbeams to be a bit "darker" than other nickelwound rounds. It's not a bad thing by any means (especially helps on my stingray), but it was pretty noticeable to me when I switched from Slinkys (which are also relatively low tension, I believe). As a flatwound player you might appreciate the darker tone of the Sunbeams.
