Best sounding dead roundwounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I'm looking for a new set of strings for my Ovation Magnum. Currently I have DR Chromes on the beast, but I'm still debating whether or not flatwounds are my thing. They sound just a little too dead and have sustain just shorter than I would prefer. Also their tension has maxed out my trussrod with a medium action and I would prefer a low one.

I know that some roundwounds sound better than other after accumulating years of dust, so what do you guys recommend me? I prefer a string with a little extra mids and less highs if that makes a difference.

PS: The less twangy the D and G string, the better

I like DR Nickel LoRiders for the reasons you decribe. They mellow very nicely with age(and I'm a flatwound kinda guy, so it's hard for me to find rounds that I really like!)

GHS Boomers. You'll get the tone you describe after about 8 hours of playing time, and it gets better for the next couple months.

I like the Roto rounds on my basses.I currently only have one roundwound strung bass (highly modified Fender Jaguar) but its got dead Rotos in it. Eventually you get enough skin flakes, oil, and grime in there where they turn silky smooth like flats.

+1 on that. I've got Boomers on 2 basses and GHS Flats on a 3rd bass and can't tell a big difference between them.

+1. I've have a set for a few months on my Rebop 5 (a bright sounding bass to begin with), and they've mellowed quite nicely. I was going for that Bernard Edwards of Chic sound and definitely got what I was looking for.

D'Addario XL's come in a close 2nd, IMHO.

I think the common factor here is nickel strings. They have a mellower tone than steel to begin with, so you're already halfway there. By breaking 'em in, you're just "rounding out the edges".

strings

Boomers. They mellow out really nicely. I leave them on for ages. They keep a bit of high end even after months of use and boil well. Never clanky. Also pretty cheap.
I use them of fretted and fretless.

DR Hi-Beams for me. I've had a set for over 2 years and they still sound good!

The DR High-Beams do sound good as they age. I had a set on a Fender Jazz for a couple of years and they got nice and mellow but still had some edge. For me the Rotos did not age well. They just got dead and thumpy and never turned silky smooth like a flatwound string, just dead and thumpy.

I like my SIT Powerwounds after they've been grime-itized a bit, you get a nice smooth warm sound, but they still have a little zip if you dig into em right.

seanm makes a great point, why not flats ? To my ears dead rounds sound nothing like flatwound strings. I love the sound of broken in nickel strings. When I want a flatwound sound I reach for my Fender P-bass with La Bella flats...works fine for me.
