E string is the best but the A string can be pretty cool to.

Pick players use every kind of string that's available, depending on their own personal preferences, the types of music they play, the particular instruments they have, etc. The question is only about one order of magnitude less pointless than "what's the best bass guitar for playing bass lines to songs?" on the pointless scale! Look up a list of all available strings on a website that sells strings, and there's your answer! And I mean that in the friendliest way possible!

Bass users useing picks have used every major brand and type of string out there. Its totally a question of personal pref. I use roundwounds only.

I like flats a lot for picking. Chunkier sound and a unique feel.

I leave mine in the sun and rain for a few weeks until they rust before I put them on my bass. Give a nice dirty rock bass sound. Any brand will work for this method.
