Best strings for Big Al 5 H ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Which strings would you recommend for a EBMM Big Al 5 H?

I am after a good, big, warm fingertone for Soul but do not want to go flatwound.

Believe it or not, Ernie Ball strings work great with Ernie Ball basses. If you like that new string sound and practice a TON like I do, I'd change the strings once every 1 or 2 months. They are only about $22 a pack too!

This. I'm not a fan of EB strings on any other basses but EB's. However, on Stingrays, Sterlings and Big Als, Slinkies just seem to work.

Well Slinkys are what I have been using on the BA5 until now and they do sound good. I just wanted to try something else besides the typical slinkys or D'Adarrio EXLs. Ive got all my EB Basses strung with Slinkys again besides one Stingray that has LaBella Slappers and another one with Galli Rockstars on it.

I espeially did not like the nickel LoRiders on my Big Al 4 SSS, but it sounds great with coated slinkys.

What about such things as Circle K, Cocco nickels or D'Angelico Nickel Concepts? I've never tried those. I am after a more old school tone for the Big Al 5

I have never had a Big Al and had never really used DR strings before, but I got a Bongo 5HH with Sunbeams on it and I loved everything about the MM+DR combo. I just got an SR5 HH and I put some Sunbeams on it as well. It ended up being amazing too. I really like the Sunbeams on my basses.

If you want that warmer tone without going flats you could also go with "Compression Rounds" GHS and Ken Smith make them.

Best prices would be here:

GHS Pressurewound Flats Bass Strings - 5 String Set

Ken Smith COMPRESSION WOUND - 5 String Set

Sign up as a VIP (tell Jason you're a TB member) and you get really great prices.

Here's a comparison pic for the compression wound:

Those Pressurewounds might be a good idea.
How stiff are they, compared to regular slinkys?
