best strings for Drop C whole-step on a jazz bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
ok, so i play in a christian heavy metal band, and we usually play in drop C whole-step. i've been using my OLP MM2 for most of the time i've been in this band, regularly strung with .110 Power Slinkies. during this time my VM jazz has been goin through a string revolution of sorts, wearing rotosound .95's, Fender 9050m flats and .100 super slinkies in rotation. i've played a couple shows with the jazz with super slinkies, but the .100 just wasn't enough "booty" for me, and i'm just not a fan of super slinky tone on this jazz.

i'd like something a little "brighter", and i'd like to go for a .105 to try and grab that C a little better. lower tension is always good too, as the neck on this Squier VM jazz is UBER sensitive.

thanx in advance guys!

I play music similar to what you describe: frequently tune down to D# and Hipshot Xtend the E string to D- which makes my detuned E a C#... so Im close to what you have there

Daddario XLs have worked well for me in this regard, and Im trying Ken Smith Burners at the moment. I also got a deal on a bulk of Markley Super wounds that sounded pretty good- the tension was a bit much since I like to bend strings a bit but the sound was nice. Years ago I detuned w/ another band of mine and I used Markley blue steels that sounded awesome new but didnt last very long...

Btw, Ive been a medium (.105) user for a long time. You might even try Rotosounds Billy Sheehan set... heard good things about those detuned as well. Have fun exploring

thanks for the reply! i've been looking into rotosounds for a while, so it's good to see you mention it. D'addario has been on my mind also, as i've used them on my OLP in the past. have you personally tried the Sheehan set? those are what i'll probably try if i go for roto's.

also, what do you think of the X-tender...is it fairly accurate in dropping exactly a whole step?
