Best strings for FENDER PRECISION

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently bought a new US FENDER PRECISION.

What strings would you all recommend for it??

I've got flatwounds on my other bass, so I'm thinking about sticking with roundwounds.

I would put TI Jazz Flats on it.

I think a lot of it depends on what style of music you play and what type of sound you're going for.

Mine is currently wearing DR Sunbeams, which is a great warm-sounding round.

D'addario chromes with a thicker gauge seem to be playing nice for me right about now

What is it that you dislike about the factory strings on it?

I never liked the sound of a precision with rounds...if I were you I'd put flats on this one and rounds on a different one...a j-bass, maybe? Of course, IMO, YMMV, etc.

My other bass is a Hofner which DEFINITELY needs flats.

Actually the factory strings on the precision aren't that bad (and I've been thinking about keeping them on). Just thought I'd get some opinions on what's out there...

You are going to get a lot of different answers. But since no one has said 760FLs, I guess I will. But for rounds I like the Fender strings.

This is like asking "How long is a piece of string?" There are so many possible answers that it's pointless to start counting them.

Just remember that there are really only a small handful of string manufacturers in the world and everyone buys those strings and slaps their name on 'em. Start with the cheapest ones you can find and work your way upward 'til you find ones you like.

correct. you have to find the strings you like yourself.

i can only say which strings i like on my p:
- rounds = fender 8250 (45-110tw). the new American Standard Ps are originally equipped with these, afaik.
- flats = d'addario chromes, 40-100.

generally, you have to find out if your p-bass works better with rounds or with flats. you can often read "Ps sound better with flats". this is not always the case. some Ps need rounds. i don't know why. might have something to do with the fretboard (maple vs. rosewood) ...

The new American P's sound AWESOME with the stock strings if you like burping mids.

I also like D'Addario ECB81 XL Chromes, they are a kind of "bright" flatwound. All in all I prefer rounds.

D'Addario XLs are my preference for nickel rounds. I love the sound of rounds on a P. I also love the sound of flats on a P. That's why I have 2 Ps.

I kept the stock Fender 8250 110tw for the E string and put TI
Jazz Flats on the A, D and G strings. I know it sounds weird but it
was the result of testing a lot of strings (costly experiment).

The stock Fender 8250 D and G strings are just too twangy for
me. They sound like guitard strings. TI Jazz Flats solved that
problem better than anything else I tried.

However, the TI Jazz Flats just didn't have the growl on the E
string that I wanted. The Fender 8250 110tw had that classic
growl and was as good as or better than the rest.

For the A string, I could have gone with either the Fender or
the TI Jazz Flat. Surprisingly, they sound very much alike.

My P is wearing Elixirs, which is my first try on any bass, and I get a lot of compliments on the sound. However, I just tried the Sunbeams on my Jazz, and they are quite nice, but I think that the Elixirs have a but more midrange growl.
