Best strings for a graphite neck bass? (Zon)

Sign in to disble this ad
ive had my zon since last year and gone through a few sting sets usually just buying any pack of strings, but im curious to know which ones would be best or do you find best for graphite neck basses?

not sure if it helps but i like a bright chunky kind of tone.

I've used Ken Smith Stainless Steel Rockmaster Mediums or Medium-Lights on my Modulus for the past 19 years

...although admittedly I'm starting to think about changing to a different string now. (That's a subject for a whole 'nother thread though.)

The Smiths have been bright, clear, punchy...not sure if I'd call them "chunky" but then again, I'm not sure I know what that means. And they keep their tone forever, much more consistent over time than any other roundwound I've tried.

I've been using DRs with my Zon. That's my stock answer. I haven't tried enough to say whether they are bright and chunky, but they are bright enough for me.

Status Hotwire strings are a great place to start. produced for status and should be great with any other Graphite neck bass.

strings and graphite necks

I am also curious about which strings might be preferred for graphite instruments. I have had my Status S-2 Classic since '99 and absolutely love it. I've played many strings (always SS roundwounds) starting with Hot Wires, DR, GHS and lately LaBella (all great strings). However I am more recently focusing on a smoother tone and as much as I like the Mark King sound, the graphite bass with SS strings does have a bit of a clank to it that's a bit harsh even for the slap. Looking for opinions on a string type or manufacturer that might take some of the clank out (probably not flats but you never know, maybe some has tried it). Of course tweaking the eq is important as well. Thanks for any insight
