Best Strings for Slapping?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this is somewhat of an individual opinion answer. But I figure I would like hear some of the opinions of others.

I have been playing for over 30 years, Hard Rock, and Jazz styles. I never really perfected a Slapping style, but i am focusing on learning now. What strings would be the best for this?

I know some strings do respond and pop better then others.

I currently use the following:
Spector Euro LX 4 String
Warwick German Corvette
Pedulla 1987 MVP

Thanks

I personally like DR Lo riders. They are stainless steel with a hex core. They are very bright and snappy. I have tried many other strings too. Usually as long as they have a hex core which most strings do have they will work good for slap. As far as using nickle or stainless steel that is more of personal preforance. Everyone has their own style and string choice though. Some like a thinner gauge with higher action for slap. I like a higher gauge with a low/medium action. Hopefully others will let you know what they try too so you can decide what you'd like to try.

Low tension, nickel-plated steel. I'm a huge fan of Circle K's. If you get a balanced set (maybe .100 for the E?), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the bright sound that preserves a decent fundamental and isn't too clanky.

...any nickle round wound... I prefer DR nickle Lo riders which are high tension, but suck at slap...

I like Sadowsky blue label stainless steels or bright nickels for slapping. I love the tone I can get from them plus they stay bright for a while as long as you keep them clean.

Well since the best strings ever are Circle K Strings it must be those until someone comes out with something better.

This man speaks the truth.

I mean, I'm all for market competition, but at some point, you have to realize that your product is completely inferior to Circle K and give up. We'll let D'Addario slide, though. They at least publish the string mass/tension information, have the largest mass-produced low B-string, and offer enough gauges to build a balanced set.

When I played on this track "Nothing is Real" It was with a Ken Smith 6 string, with Rock Masters, with the B dropped to A. On the intro you can hear a bit what they sound like in a metal slap scenario...

For a stronger slap tone I used the heavier gauge Rock Masters... For a lighter, faster playing string I also have used the Slap Masters and they are currently on my 6 string fretted smith. I play a lot of Jazz and Pop stuff with them.

The lighter the string, the easier you can work around some of the slap / pop techniques if your not used to them.

I had Hi-Beams on a Fender Jazz that I would slap a lot on and they were really solid, gave a really fat solid tone.
