Question Best tapered bass strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm gonna need to use tapered bass strings on my Spector Euro LX5. I like .130 gauges or more. Who is the best manufacturer?

They show some LaBella sets...I suppose you could have
them order what you need. The LaBella website shows they
make these up to .128

Good Luck

Ok, thanks, a .128 should be heavy enough for me.

Hmmm, they don't appear to stock La Bella 5 string sets.

Just FYI, Super Steps are exposed core, not tapered. La Bella Slappers are tapered. Additionally *all* La Bella sets have tapered B strings (Hard Rockin Steels, Deep Talkin bass - even the flats and tapewound).

>>> That's funny...I'm holding a brand new set of
Super Steps in my hand right now. They are NOT exposed
core, they are clearly tapered. If you want exposed core,
take a look at the Rotosound Piano String Design; those
are exposed core.

Warwick fit their own black label strings to their 5 string basses, and the B is tapered, so you can check out their sound and feel at a Warwick stockist, and then make your choice. Sound Control in Manchester usually have a large range of Warwicks in stock.

I'm using a Spector 5 string though. And I HATE warwick strings....they have a kinda sticky feel to them.

wrap is "stepped down" as it continues in that fashion toward
the ball end? That is a "taper" type string or perhaps a varaiation of a taper, you don't see the core wire until it loops around the ball end. Exposed core is like a piano string. Only the center or "core" wire passes over the saddle. Rotosound calls them "Piano String Design".

have the core covered by wraps or windings all the way to
the ball end loop. To me, exposed core means just that;
the actual round or hex core is unwound and fully exposed at the point where it makes contact with the saddle. Perhaps
we're both a bit tangled up on the nomenclature.

This is a set of Super Steps I had strung on a Jazz bass. Geez, I didn't anticipate a semantical discussion about exposed core vs. tapered. The picture speaks for itself. Make of it what you will.

La Bella super steps are the best , and they are "exposed" core not taper . Taper look like this (look at the B string) .
