There are lots of different flavors of flats. Fender flats are pretty thumpy and very traditional. If you are looking for brighter tones, the Ti Flats or Rotosound flats might work better for you. Lots of topics on flats if you do a forum search.

I like Rotosounds alot on my P-bass, they sound wonderful and work well in most types of music.

Most being the operative word.

I've only ben playing for about 7 months so i dont have experience with flat wounds.
If you care: Flea uses GHS precision flat wounds on his Jazz bass.

i recently switched from fender 9050ml's (had them on for 3+ years)
to labella 760fl's...not as much thump but more articulate and even,
i'm leaving these on for 50 years...give or take...

note: if you like low action, get higher tension strings, i got so used to playing hard with the fenders that when i put the labella's on i had to raise my action quite a bit.

way back when i started playing... i didn't like flats... i was even picky about rounds... after years of changing strings and trying every thing there is to get in the market... i first found that i like nickel... but not nickel plate but pure nickel...
but there was a problem getting pure nickel strings... so i found PYRAMID(German firm that makes strings since forever)
i liked their rounds with pure nickel wound around stainless steel round core... they are the dream... then an old bass player that started in the late 50' that is getting back to music wanted that old sound he was used to... he commented new round strings like guitar strings and not bass

then i ordered a set of Pyramid gold... let me tell you it was like traveling with a time machine back to the beginning of electric bass!!! it was warm, round, bassy, groovy... wow!!! they where the bass string!!! now i use flats on most my basses except those that are intended to be slapped(ones with maple boards)

i recommend PYRAMID GOLD nickel flats to every one that wants that true bass sound!!! they are not as glassy as most stainless flats!!! they are DA BOMB!!!

You know I hated the Fender's because it sounded so tinny to me but they do have a lot of thump. I'd go for Labella's.

I've heard DR makes a mean set of flats too, but I haven't had the opportunity to try them.

I think that whatever stings you get, use them for a long time. I have a set of strings on my fretless that were on there when I got the bass and I love them. If you are going to go for the flatwound tone, go all out and just use them until they sound like upright strings.
