Black Nylon Tape Wound

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone ever put La Bella Black Nylon Tape Wound on a fretless. I was thinking bout trying it on a Peavey Cirrus 5 string fretless. Do you think it would give it a double bass kind of sound? Thoughts.......

Some thoughts

For fretless I prefer Nilon Filament (Fender strings) but I understand the 5 string need as well... So yes, you will have yourself a great little upright as long as you don't "mwwwwaaaw" too much.

Just did some session work for Chris Jamison and switched between my upright and fretless for different songs and honestly the only thing that didn't sound "upright" was the speed. Tapewounds are the "wood" sounding strings for fretless... you'll sound great!

It ain't perfect, but as close as you can get, I think.

That's a pretty cool picture!

Yeah, with enough rosin you can bow the hell out of an electric bass! Just have to bow on the neck to deal with the lack of curvature... the body gets in the way

Have you also considered the Rotosound Trubass 88s? Very thumpy and woody.

I'm using Fender black tapewounds on my Squier fretless. I think they sound great and have a good feel as well. I'm just about due for a new set.

+1. I have them on my Hofner Icon and they nail the McCartney vibe dead on. It makes the Hofner sound like an upright. I can highly recommend the Roto Tru Bass 88s.

I've got a set of LaBellas on my fretless 55-94. The lowest price I found was at Carvin, of all places.

I use labella tapes on all of 'em (the Clement has metals on it right now but sounds awesome with tape wounds.

Worth trying the labellas as well as other tapes....IMO they're all quite unique.

Can tapewounds be used on a fretted bass? Can I get a bluegrass type sound with them? My friend might need me to stand in for their upright player player because he is going to play mandolin. I'll be playing at our towns fall festival. I'll be using a jazz bass.

but of course! i use them on nearly all of my fretted basses. some type of foam mute to decrease sustain will also help much to get you 'closer' to a bluegrass-type of bass sound. later, ron

I have used both the LaBellas and Fender tapewounds. They are both really great string sets.
The LaBellas are tapewrapped flats. They have a shorter decay and would make a great string for emulating the upright sound. Their string tension would be medium to tight.
The Fenders are pretty well the opposite. They are medium to light tensioned. They are also roundwound under the tape and are very flexible.
Both string sets deliver a deep rumbling sound. I think you would enjoy either set.
GHS has recently introduced a 4 and 5 string set of tapes. I do not know a lot about them, but they are of a lesser gauge than either the Fenders or Labellas. Rotosound has a set of tapes that have a good rep, but I have not tried them yet.
Word of warning: The Fenders and GHS (from what a rep told me) will not work on a body through bass bridge.
The LaBellas can be had in an extra long length for body through bridges. The best prices on the Labellas are from Carvin, and with the shipping charges they are still cheaper to get there than any other place I have seen on the net.

Curious since Fender makes so many string-through-body basses. The Fender nylon tapes on my franken-pj fretless look like there's enough room between the silk and the nut that they would accomodate a thru-body configuration, but I've never tried it. I love em!

never try on a fretless but on my fretted Pbass the labellas suits me better than the rotosounds wich i feel sloppy ;labella's are more stiff ,both produce a convincing acoustic sound .the roto comes in 3 different scale lenght ,short, long, extra long.
