Anyone ever put La Bella Black Nylon Tape Wound on a fretless. I was thinking bout trying it on a Peavey Cirrus 5 string fretless. Do you think it would give it a double bass kind of sound? Thoughts.......

Just did some session work for Chris Jamison and switched between my upright and fretless for different songs and honestly the only thing that didn't sound "upright" was the speed. Tapewounds are the "wood" sounding strings for fretless... you'll sound great! |

It ain't perfect, but as close as you can get, I think.

That's a pretty cool picture! | Yeah, with enough rosin you can bow the hell out of an electric bass! Just have to bow on the neck to deal with the lack of curvature... the body gets in the way |

| | | | I'm using Fender black tapewounds on my Squier fretless. I think they sound great and have a good feel as well. I'm just about due for a new set.

Worth trying the labellas as well as other tapes....IMO they're all quite unique. |

My friend might need me to stand in for their upright player player because he is going to play mandolin. I'll be playing at our towns fall festival. I'll be using a jazz bass. |

The LaBellas are tapewrapped flats. They have a shorter decay and would make a great string for emulating the upright sound. Their string tension would be medium to tight.
The Fenders are pretty well the opposite. They are medium to light tensioned. They are also roundwound under the tape and are very flexible.
Both string sets deliver a deep rumbling sound. I think you would enjoy either set.
GHS has recently introduced a 4 and 5 string set of tapes. I do not know a lot about them, but they are of a lesser gauge than either the Fenders or Labellas. Rotosound has a set of tapes that have a good rep, but I have not tried them yet.
Word of warning: The Fenders and GHS (from what a rep told me) will not work on a body through bass bridge.
The LaBellas can be had in an extra long length for body through bridges. The best prices on the Labellas are from Carvin, and with the shipping charges they are still cheaper to get there than any other place I have seen on the net. |

The Fender nylon tapes on my franken-pj fretless look like there's enough room between the silk and the nut that they would accomodate a thru-body configuration, but I've never tried it. I love em! |
