Question Black Nylons on a Stingray.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

I need to challenge myself and instead of buying a new bass/pedal/amp, I thought I might put some of the Rotosound Black Nylon Tapewounds on my Stingray.

Has anybody ever tried this?

Did anybody have to adjust their neck?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Festus.

Rotosound tapewounds are low tension, despite the size and lack of flexibilty. They're a light gauge roundwound (about 45-95) wrapped in nylon tape, and the tape doesn't affect the tension. Depending on what you have now, it's possible you'll have to loosen the rod.

But to my ears, they're about the deadest sounding strings out there. The LaBellas are more flexible and much more lively sounding to me. I used them for years on a particular bass I no longer own.

I had tried a set of Wyres Nylon Tapewounds on my Sterling HH and loved it until 2, yep, count 'em 2, G strings freaked out on me. One never stuck(the silk kept slipping at the post) and the 2nd broke at a gig 3 days after putting it on...... it was the 2nd string in 15+ yrs. of playing that I've broken.....

anywho, the tapewounds sounded great and felt awesome, I say go for it!

Haha!

Thank god I didn't ask about replacing a broken G string on a Stingray!

Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna go for it!

If you're talking about the Rotosound RS 88s, they're 65-115, not 45-95.

Please reread my post. I'm well aware of the outside dimensions.

In fact, they are a 44-54-78-96 roundwound string set that is then wrapped in tape. The tape thickness adds nothing to the tension. Some people think they're high tension because they're thick. They're not. They have the same tension as a typical extra-light roundwound set. That's why Rotosound's website calls them "ultra low tension."

Just don't leave 'em on there too long unless the Stingray's fretless. If you do (like I did) one night you'll fret a note and hear this "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" sound only to find that the tape has worn through, unwound, and now hangs on your string like the proverbial wet blanket. Big fun in the middle of a tune.
