Black strings for a 5 (?)

Sign in to disble this ad
For aesthetic purposes on my new baby(Warwick Corvette), I'm looking for some black colored strings. Now from what I've read/heard from people the black beauties are pretty bright. I prefer more of a bright flats type of sound and feel, or maybe semi's. Though I haven't been able to find any that are black. I'm ok with even a mellower sounding round, I just don't like an overbright kind of sound(to me round steels). I saw nylon flats, but those didn't seem bright enough. haha Probably asking much to find something like this. Just didn't know if maybe someone knew offhand where I could find something like this.
Thanks all

Rotosound nexus or DR black beauties are the ones I know of. The drs would prob last longer as far as coating wear since theyre useing the same formula for coating as neons use now. Important for pick users. Had neons on my eagle bass for just at 6 weeks now. I can only find one very small hard to see without magnifying glass, nick on the coating so far. On the G string. Rotosound nexus are said to be slightly brighter then their swing 66.

+1 go DR's. Even the 'old' er style coated BLACK BEAUTIES aint THAT bright. They DO sound like new nickel rounds tho- only with that slightly 'subdued' coated sound. Then after a gig or two they do sound like 'uncoated' rounds that've just worn in. Then they STAY that way for a long time.

I;'ve not tried the newer DR NEON coateds- but they SAY the coating lasts longer than the older DR coateds. TBH tho- even after the color wears off -where U pick- it's not that noticeable- they STILL look like BLACK strings.

Other black strings I KNOW of- are the NYLON coated/wrapped Fenders, Labellas etc.. These are essentially FLATWOUNDS with a wrapping, so they sound far more dull/thuddy/ 'uprite like' than regular flats. VERY hard getting a bright tone outta these. BUT - I gotta set of Labellas on my Precision & I LOVE 'em. Lovely 'old-school' tone. just don't expect to get a 'zingy' slap outta them. :-)

Rotosound make a black nylon covered string- It MAY have the taper ends.. IIRC one of their flats or similar do.
Goodluck
