Bleach Quick Fix?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was showing my guitar mentor a shoddy lefty bass and asking for some lutherie advice to make it a righty. And we started to discuss tone. It has nothing on my Indonesian J-bass but he recommended that i soak the strings in bleach. For a quick fix until i make to a GC. I live in the middle of nowhere so i guess I'll give it a shot. Anyone ever tried/heard about this?

Bleach? Can't imagine that being a good mix with the gunk in your strings. Try denatured alcohol.

I wonder what bleach would do to some finishes and 'boards.

Bleach won't do anything good to your strings.

My chemistry is a little fuzzy, but from what I remember, bleach is an oxidizer - probably not something that you'd want to treat metal strings with. Mythbusters put some in a car once and it completely rusted the gas tank and fuel system on the inside (more effective than sugar, for sure).

+1` on the denatured alcohol I use it and it works fine. does no damage and leaves your strings as clean as they can get.
Just be sure to let them dry before you put them back on.

Poppycock!!! I tried this method the other day, and i used a lil concoction out of bleach, hot water, acetone, and ajax and 409.(all i needed was some cold medicine and i'd prolly make some crystal meth). But seriously though i just didn't wanna waste the rest of my bleach for the experiment.

I soaked the strings just long enough so the liquid wasn't hot but cooled to a luke warm. And let me tell you ZERO crud. the strings were brought back to life. Not very New sounding but very clear.the thread at the top was wearing out more but who cares it was just a lil ghetto experiment.
