blue/cold steel?

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw an ad in bass player for something like this. it said they were frozen at -320 degrees fahrenheit. Are they worth it, is there a difference?

They freeze them to make them harder, and supposedly more difficult to break. Be careful with a vintage instrument; I had a late 60's Fender Mustang that I strung with Blue Steels, and the tore the frets to pieces.

I think that they sound great on paper and on theory. I put some on my Sadowsky for a while...

Wasn't my thing.

The End.

I must be lucky. I've used blue steels for about a year now, and they have worked fantastic for me. Nice bright sound. But I'm thinking of moving on to DR's. Everyone I know loves them, but I haven't gotten around to trying them.

They are very nice strings. In my experience, up there with the best steel strings.

The freezing thing is an absolute gimmick.

+1.

I've had some great Blue Steel sets, and some serious duds. The inconsistency was ridiculous. Never again will I play them.

DR Hi-Beams ftw!!!

Yes, Hi-Beams, imo, are at the top of the steel string ladder as well.

I have tried Fat-Beams,Low-Riders, and Hi-Beams, but I LOVE Blue Steels, They hav nice bright sound, and last almost forever. Only problem is they might feel kinda rough at times but overall I love em!!!!

I have used 45-1-5 Blue Steels on my EB Sabre for a while and like them. Rough for sure but isn't that all steel strings ? I don't think they as rough as roto 66's..I bought some nickel plated 45-100 sets 2674A (cheap of Ebay of course) and they are crap. Thin sounding and dead feeling.

Not necessarily.
If I remember correctly, they use cryogenic treatment on some gun parts, mostly barrels.
It is supposed to realign the crystalline structure of the steel, making it more dense and tougher. (or something like that, I am not a metallurgist)

Supposedly.YMMV.

Of Course it could also be a gimmick.
