Blues Bass Strings ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looks like my Blues band is falling apart. We are having trouble getting gigs and paying to practice and seems it is just loosing steam. I ran an ad in the local Craigslist and got a response from a Singer / Harp player ,Guitar player and Drummer who play very Trad. Blues,Muddy Waters , Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin Wolf, ect. With my curent band we do a Chicago Blues set and I use my Classic 50's P with Flats for that set and it's a great fit. Everthing these new guys are playing is 50's & 60's Chicago Blues. My question is , should I take just the flatwound strung Precision to the audition and leave the roundwound strung Basses at home ? Thanks

Imfreeman9, great to get an anwser from Chicago ! I think I will take your advice and take the 50's P. I am kinda bummed, I just scored a 1974 Fender Precision and put rounds on it. I may start thinking about flatwounds on the '74. Thanks

Flats are the way to go for Blues My Man! Heck, you can use flats for everything!
If you want to try something a little more toneful though, try the Fender 7150's Pure Nickel Roundwounds. They are a little bright at first, but then they turn percussive and bassey like flats! They have more midrange which may be the little extra you need to cut through better. Especially in the low mids. At first when they are at their brightest, just roll off your tone knob!

I don't know about flats for everything, I tried to use my flatwound strung Bass on songs like "Shaky Ground" and it did not cut it,had to use the rounds for that stuff. I have tried the Fender 7150's and with all do respect they sound nothing like flatwound strings to me. The 7150's sound like very warm and broken in nickel roundwounds to my ears. Thanks for the sugestion but I am going with the flats for this one.
