Boiling Strings?

I was reading somewhere that you can restore the sound of your strings by boiling them in water and adding substances such as soap or vinegar to the water. Is this true? I have never heard of boiling strings. I would try it out but I just bought a new set of strings and I don't want to ruin them.

Do not boil it with water, just use denatured alcohol (at room temperature).

Do a search in the slab department.

Since you use flats on a db, I don't think it'll give you major improvement. It works best with roundwounds.
I also think that gut strings won't survive this kind of treatment.

EDIT: Seeing your profile reveals that you posted in the wrong forum...Go to BG.

As usual, PMS is right on the money - you're in the ANTIQUEBASS section, where the only thing we tend to boil is wayward Slabbers. Before you get all covered with blisters over an honest mistake, I'll help you find your way home.

Simply click your heels together three times, and repeat after me:

Jaco only needed four strings...

Jaco only needed four strings...

Jaco...
