I've done BOTH - boiled in water.... boiled in water w/ a li'l soap liquid, Works fine- sttrings sound next to new again for a few gigs. Soaked in alkyhole - (NOT BOILED IN ALKYHOLE) & this worked just as well as boiling in water. I think it's OK for a cuppla times IF one is 'financially challenged' ........Strings aint cheap & recycling IS the word of the new millenium??????

Few thoughts, after a few years since i posted this.

Price of strings in Ireland, d'addarios are about e25, slinkys e35, elixir's forget about it. They are expensive. And music shops few and far between.

With the alcohol soaking(not boiling) method, does the quality of the alcohol deteriorate with each soak or is it good for a long time?

How long would you leave strings boiling in water and washing up liquid?

And how long would you leave strings soaking in denatured alcohol for?

to those who boil alcohol,

the quickest, most efficient method is to pour some alcohol in a bowl, put our strings in and microwave them for 3 or 4 min. strings come out perfectly new!

.... please don't do this.
