Bongo players...what strings do you recommend?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this is a "string" question in the "basses" forum, but the other similar threads listed in the string section just aren't getting answered.

What strings do you Bongo players use? I don't like the EB Slinkys so please don't recommend 'em.

I was thinking of trying: DR Lo Riders, D'Addario Nickels, and maybe MTD Stainless (these are my favorite, but don't last a long time).

Any suggestions?

Bongos use heads, not strings, last I checked.

If you're going to use a string, I'd recommend the A string.

I have the same question. I have been meaning to post this thread myself!

I too wanna know. I have been using EB Hybrid Slinky's, but I am open to any options.

Something warm, and jazzy

Sadowsky Blue Label Steels are great for that bass. Even though I do like EB Slinkys

The bongo I tried had sun beams and they sounded great. Then again I like sunbeams on a lot of basses...

Try a bunch of different strings. That's what I did. What strings I like is irrelevant to anyone else.

Quite true. I should probably qualify what I want out of a string before asking everyone else.

My "sound" is MTD 535 with MTD Stainless Strings...kind of aggressive with some nice meat. Not too much sizzle or trebly ping. MTD's can be known for that so I set my treble knob flat and really never touch it.

Currently I have DR Hi-Beams on my fretted Bongo. The best strings I've played, I must say.

Since I like fresh sounding strings- I find that the Bongo tone responds to Elixirs very well. It's the only thing I use on mine. I think that the clear tone of the Bongo tends to betray the tone of strings that are going dead. I play nearly every night and can get many months of use out of my Elixirs!

I bought a set of TI Flats for $50 on the chuckout rack in a music shop a year or two ago. Best thing I ever did. There were two packs there as well, should've grabbed em both

I agree you have a really good tone, on the youtube vids i've seen.

I think I am going to pick me up some TI Flats, and DR Hi-Beams.

The TI's have interested me for quite sometime. I dont know how well I'd like the tension though. I play fairly hard, although I am working on a softer touch.
