bought some chromes today

Put some D'addario chromes on my p bass today. First time I've ever tried a set of flats out and I love them. They sound great and feel great, I can't believe how smooth they feel compared to rounds. Like a baby's ass I swear to god.

Anyways, I bought them on my way home from work at my local music store today, and thought it was funny what the guy helping me said after I told him I would be putting them on my p bass. "Wow, you never see people putting flats on a p bass, it's always the j bass!"

LOL

I wish more people would put flats on Jazz basses. Conventional wisdom is often really dumb, and the whole "flats on P, rounds on J" thing is at the top of the list for me. I love rounds on P's, and flats on J's. And vice versa, of course, but I'm into shaking things up.

I hate flats on P but dig 'em on J.

Alright, well, they CAN sound nice on P. But when I play a P with flats it's so disappointing.

Yeah, I often used to dislike jazz basses before I realized that I just preferred them with flats. Takes the edge off the tone, which works for me. I can go for either on a precision, though. Ps are just the bees'-knees.

I have enjoyed both basses with both types of strings, it depends more on the band context for me. I think flats on a j-bass is a pretty cool sound, it worked for me in a jazz-fusion trio really well a while ago.

I've had light gauge chromes (.40-.100) on my J for the past couple of years. It works really well.

Ya, flats sound great on a J. Jerry Jemmott made some awesome sounds with flats on a Jazz back in the day.

Rounds on a P is one of the best "in the mix" sounds I have played. It's one of those sounds that I can turn up loud and no one asks me to turn down.

My only dilema is I have only 1 P bass. And I love it with flats too.

I agree with Jerry's flats on a J assuming that is what he is using on the King Curtis and Aretha Live at the Fillmore recordings.

I like S.I. T. Silencers on my jazz bass. They are a semi-flat wound string. No fret "clang" when you hammer on.

I use chromes on both my Jazz and P. I switch back and forth between the two and I like how it keeps my sound consistent. A jazz with flats is my go to first all the time then I'll try the P and see which is better. Jazz wins out more often than not!

I found the solution, cunning in its simplicity, bold in its execution.

I have a P with flats a P with rounds, a J with flats, and a J with rounds.

Planning on getting a J and putting flats on it.
I just wonder if a J works better with smaller gauge flats ? My P is great with Labella FM's on it, not so sure what a J needs flat-wise?

I find medium guages work fine, I prefer big fat flats on a P more than on a J personally.
