Break in time for Rotos?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey there people!

I just recently went back to Rotos after a long break (2yrs or more). Bounced around with DR, D'Addario, Dunlop, etc. for some time. Anyway, to get to the point...I found the Rotos problematic to keep in tune for longer than I was used to. I don't remember them being like that. Usually with other strings, I stretch 'em and they lock into tune in just a few days.

Is this normal for Rotos?
(I had to ask since I had a 2 Roto sets dead right out of the pack from my last order. They replaced them immediately, so no complaints there. Thanks Rotosound! )

Are the strings secure around the tuning posts? Ball end fully seated?

Hi Jason,

Yeah, I believe they should be. I've been stringing the same way for a while.

P.S The dead strings were not from you.

If you are talking Swing Bass Rounds I would say they break right in after a few hours continuous of playing. I floated around trying others but Rotos work for me best. I have been using them for many, many years.

Yep, Swing bass rounds dude...just weird. Same tuning as with other strings: D standard, so nothing new.

Rotos have held tune for me just fine ever since the mid 70's when I started using them. I expect a little bit of minor retuning the first couple days. But after that hardly ever needs retuning. Are you taking your time and snugging each wrap up against the previous one? If youve gotten used to strings without silk and the way rotos tuning peg end of the strings is. Then you might have been a bit sloppy/loose in initial installation without realizing it. Of course wrap other strings the same way. But rotos bit unique end of string thing does make it unwise to rush restringing. Personally I can kinda imagine the way rotos do it as being better for string tuning stability around peg. So long as you make sure your snugging each wrap up against the previous one.

I put the last set of roto swing66 on my warlock after having been playing dr neons only for the near a year. And yeah they reminded me to be careful with wrapping cause that outer wire wraped kinda loose around the core under the red silk for tuning peg end of strings isnt like DR and most other string ends Ive tried.

The first and last time I used Rotos, they held tune just after a few minutes of playing. Too bad the E and G sounded like month old Chromes ( were much darker in color as well) and the A and D didn't match tone wise to them.

I'd agree with the 3 hours-ish guy.
Use nothing but Swing Rotos. Get a good sound.

If you felt something was wrong with the set of strings you should have contacted Rotosound or the re-seller.

I sent them and Email last thursday, and I received a package on Tuesday with the 2 replacement strings plus, another whole pack, stickers, a keychain and a pen. I wrote a pretty positive short post about being suprised at their quick response. If i had another bass, I'd string it up with these and give them another shot.
