Breaking a string under the silk?

Sign in to disble this ad
Was tuning my bass tonight, heard a slight 'cracking' noise near the peghead on my jazz bass... It sounded a little funny when I plugged it back in, tuned it back to standard, still sounds funny...

Is it possible to break a string under the silk windings (they are the standard strings that came on the bass when I bought it in December, I think they are fenders, they have grey silk)?? I ask because I'm worried I messed up the neck on my bass, I thought I was tuning down to D, instead tuned up to A on the low E... I didn't think that would be a severe enough tension to crack the neck or break the truss rod but now I'm concerned I seriously messed up my bass... What are your thoughts??
