Breaking strings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I play a SR5 with a nice set of DR's usually. There have been 2 instances where I have broken a string. First it was my D string, then my G. The string would just come undone pretty much at the bridge. The string doesn't actually snap or anything like that, just kind of unravels. I'm not sure if this is normal or if maybe I have a tendency to not string my bass very well. Anybody have any advice on this? Thank you.

That should not be normal. I did occassionally break G or D strings long long ago when I was playing with taped fingers. I just use pick nowadays and long ago learned not to be so heavy handed for better tone and precission and speed. Anyway, in those cases string would snap. not unravel. Sounds like you may have a burr on the saddles for D & G string wearing thru the string to cause unravel. Take strings off and take close look at and careful feel of saddles where string touches. See any little spots or bumps or other irregularity? Is so, you'll need to get it filed down so no longer there and nice and smooth.

It's probably either burrs on the bridge saddles or defective strings.

That's how I have always broken strings. and they were like almost two years old in all the cases.

Yeah, but these strings were no more than 4 months old both times.

This being the case, your bridge saddles might be a bit too high, in a way that the strings bend too much to get in their proper position and weaken very fast. Or it could be that both sets were defective, which I think is unlikely but possible.
