Breaking Strings slap and pop

Sign in to disble this ad
hello talkbass
about 3 months ago i replaced my stock fender squire j-bass strings with some DR hi-beams. After about a week of playing they sounded perfect.

keep in mind i only get a chance to play my bass like one a week the rest of the time im playing bass at school

a month ago i broke the G string while slapping and popping
so i figured sh#t happens and i replaced that one string

then today i was playing this slap groove and my D string snapped!!!
Is it me or the strings?
do i need to buy bigger D and G strings?
i like my E and A strings they way they are
and i never had these problems with my year and a half fender strings

Normally string breakage is down to a sharp metal burr at the bridge, I would check for this. I'm not sure why it wouldnt have happened with your old strings though, but you could have created a burr some how when putting them on, or its possible it was a bad set of strings. Also make sure they are tuned correctly and not too high (obviously).

And, maybe you need a bigger amp so you don't have to be so violent with your bass strings?

My guess is poor technique. There should be no reason to pull the strings that hard. You only need the string to snap back enough to hit the fretboard. You're not shooting arrows with it, after all.

Like with drummers, you need finesse. You can be faster and more fluid. Compensate with shear volume.
