What string lasts for a while but gives that piano-like tone of rotosound and the like. Also, i'm not going to get DR Loriders.

LOL
Get another set, I've owned almost nothing but DR strings and they never break on me. I was gonna recommend Lo Riders anyway...
You can also try Dean Markley Blue Steels. Great string.

Long lasting is the easy part out of the two. Just take 'em off, boil em to clean 'em and reinstall. It will bring them back to like new tone in the short term, but over the long term, will degrade a little in terms of brightness that can be brought back. Saves you tons of money! They will last you a long time too.
Good luck with it!

The D'Addario ProSteels look tasty, but only because of my current financial situation. And for some reason, Blue Steels cost 35$ in my neighborhood, so I'm wondering if buying online would be cheaper.
So keep these things in mind as you suggest.

please let me know.

They are alittle more expensive and to some people they are worth it. I dont like them because they have a slimy feel. I get the tone I want with ernie balls on my j bass and blue steels on my p bass

I put them on at the beginning of March and the B is juuuust starting to loose a tad bit of its sparkle when I thump the open note.
Otherwise, it is still all there five months later!! I've been waiting for them to go dead for ages so I can do some Zender on the bass but noooooo

So keep these things in mind as you suggest. | Again, I recommend boiling. Via this method, you can buy strings for $30 or whatever, and boil them as needed. They'll still sound great (perhaps "as new" even...) and you may not need or feel the need to buy new strings for a year or more. That makes it $30 or whatever= one year of strings. I've boiled a set of strings for one of my basses for about 3-4 years now. So that equals out to be, effectively, $10 max for strings for that bass, for each year.
Be smart. Save your money!
Good luck with it.

| | | | I have tried boiling a few times, I loose alot of my harmonic ability. My harmonics don't seem to "pop" out as much after boiling.
You can snap a blue steel string in half with one hand. Simply bend into a circle and pich at the top and the string will snap. I was skeptical, so I did the same thing to my D'Addarios and they did not break. I have snapped every set of Blue Steels I bought, I am not a aggresive player.
I personally have had amazing playablity with D'Addarios and also another brand called Black Diamond strings. I only bought one set of the Diamonds but they sounded awesome and lasted a while. I am usually against coatings as they dampin the string's high end but I tryed them and they were suprisingly bright. |

That includes wiping them down periodically while playing. Wiping down with 91% isopropyl alchohol after gigs and boiling whenever you feel its needed. This really works well to keep that nice "piano" like tone and feel (I'm kind of fanatical about it myself). Also at gigs I've been using "Fast Fret" or "Dr Ducks Ax Wax" to keep them a little slick and help keep the sweat build-up to a minimum.
As far as strings, no matter what I try I always go back to the Blue Steels. They just sound better to me than anything I've tried so far. My only gripe is that their B string doesn't come in a 130. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
